Dolch Word List

The Dolch Word List, which is also commonly referred to as Dolch Words List and Dolch's Basic Sight Words List, is a list of commonly used English words compiled by Edward William Dolch, Ph.D. Edward William Dolch, Ph.D. published his basic sight words list in his book "Problems in Reading" in 1948. Edword Dolch's word list is comprised of 220 "service words" (these are pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and verbs). Studies have show that these 220 "service words" make up 50-75% of all text found in children's books in the United States. Dr. Edward William Dolch did not include nouns in his sight word list, but he did compile a separate word list of 95 frequently used nouns.

Many of the Dolch Words included in Dolch's sight word list cannot be sounded out and cannot be taught through the use of pictures. Furthermore, phonics and decoding rules often do not apply when teaching these words to children. Therefore, in order for a child to effectively learn their sight words, and ultimately master these important words, he/she must recognize these words instantly or on "sight." There are many methods for teaching these 220 service words. Many teachers teach sight words through the use of online educational games, sight word games, and sight word activities.

The Dolch Word List is made up of 5 sight word lists, namely, Pre-Primer or Preschool, Primer or Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade and 3rd Grade. For students with learning disabilities, the sight words should be learned developmentally beginning with the Pre-Primer or Preschool list.
